The Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Stony Brook expects to have positions available with a starting date of September, 2002.

Faculty Search:

Applied Statistics or Stochastic Operations Research: Applied Mathematics and Statistics Dept. anticipates opening for tenure-track Assistant Professor in applied statistics or stochastic operations research. Demonstrated strength in applications and/or methodology essential. Department has large research program ($2.5M annually), outstanding computing facilities, numerous opportunities for collaborative research on/off campus. Send CV, 3 refs and research plan to J. Glimm, Chair, Applied Mathematics & Statistics, SUNY, Stony Brook, NY 11794-3600. SUNY-Stony Brook is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer.

Computational Biology/Bio-informatics: One or more tenure track or tenure faculty positions are anticipated in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics in the area of computational biology, mathematical biology, bio-informatics, computational genomics, computational structural biology, and allied fields. For a tenured position, an established, externally-funded research program is required as part of the track record of achievement. It is planned that these positions will be coordinated with a program for computational structural biology at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Send vita and research plan to James Glimm, Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, SUNY at Stony Brook, Stony Brook, NY 11794-3600. Also please ask three people to send references. SUNY-Stony Brook is an equal opportunity educator and employer.

Postdoc Search:

VIGRE Fellows: The Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics and the Department of Mathematics will appoint two Postdoctoral Fellows each under a Vertical Integration of Research and Education in the Mathematical Sciences (VIGRE) grant from the National Science Foundation. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Postdoctoral Fellows will be supported for 3 calendar years (including summers) and should follow the normal application procedure outlined above. VIGRE Fellows are expected to have and demonstrate a strong commitment to the integration of mathematics with the outside world or to the educational mission of the university and to participate in the university's outreach effort to either industry, financial institutions, or other educational establishments. Fellows will be offered the opportunity to spend one or two semesters at appropriate national laboratories and research institutes. Applicants should submit only one application to either the Department of Mathematics or the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics. Applications will automatically be reviewed by both departments. Please indicate clearly that you wish to be considered for the VIGRE program. Applications will continue to be considered until the position(s) are filled.

Computational Applied Math Postdocs: The department anticipates one or more postdoctoral research positions in computational applied mathematics starting in Fall 2002. Qualified candidates must have computational experience in one or more areas of fluid dynamics, parallel computing, hyperbolic conservation laws, deformation of elastic and plastic media, and flow in porous media. Research of the candidates should mesh with that of the current faculty. Information concerning the department and its research activities is available from the AMS home page. The department has a large research program ($3.0M annually) and one of the mathematical science community's top computing facilities.

Applicants should send a vita, description of research interests, and three letters of reference to: James Glimm, Chair and Distinguished Professor, Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, SUNY at Stony Brook, Stony Brook, NY 11794-3600. Applicants whose completed dossiers are received by Feb. 1, 2002 are assured of full consideration.

The Stony Brook University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. Applications from women, people of color, disabled persons, and/or special disabled or Vietnam era veterans are especially welcome.
