Academic Advising for Applied Math Majors
Advising in the Major
Students seeking Applied Math academic advising, whether or not they are already admitted to the AMS major, should see the Applied Math Undergraduate Acting Program Director Esther Arkin . Her office is on the first floor of the Math Tower in room 1-106. Her telephone number is 632-8363. For Applied Math major requirements, including requirements for admission to the Applied Math major, see AMS Major Requirements. Prof. Arkin can also provide helpful advice to Applied Math seniors about career advising and graduate school selection.
In addition, students can frequently get advise by speaking to instructors in their AMS courses after class.
Advising about D.E.C. and Other General University Graduation Requirements
Students should go to the Undergraduate Office of the College or Engineering and Applied Sciences in Engineering 127 for advising about D.E.C. and other general University graduation requirements. Students with serious health or personal problems affecting their academic performance can get supportive counseling from this office. Staff in this office are responsible for clearing all CEAS students for graduation with respect to their D.E.C and general University graduation requirements.
Career and Graduate Study Advising
Many students are unsure about the next steps in their lives after graduation from college. They are uncertain what types of jobs that are qualified for. They are uncertain whether they need additional education to get a good job and are not sure what type of graduate study would be appropriate for them.
The majority of Applied Math seniors go directly into a job upon graduation in business, most commonly working for major corporation in the New York metropolitan area. With the increasingly quantitative nature of modern business, all companies are looking for graduates with strong mathematics skills. The companies will train new hires in aspects of their business that require such skills. Most of these entry-level corporate positions also require some basic economics knowledge. As noted elsewhere, a number of AMS graduates each year become actuaries, having passed several actuarial exams while at Stony Brook. For further details, see actuarial training.
Applied Math seniors who go to graduate school typically seek additional training in one of the mathematical sciences, e.g., an M.S. in statistics or operations research, or else pursue an MBA. Faculty in different areas of the department can give extensive advise about graduate study in their area of specialty. A student who is not sure whom to talk to can get directions from the Applied Math Undergraduate Program Director.
