(3)   Your HW5 is with TA Jason and you may get yours from him during his Friday office hours. (Note: He is not the grading TA and he is doing the other TA a favor). If you can wait, Jason will bring your HW5 to the classroom on Monday (11/9).

(5)   Quiz-2 solution is posted. Grades are posted.

(6)   Original posting (10/22): Several students missed the Quiz-2 and will be granted permission to make up if good reasons can be provided. Please contact TA Jason to determine a date/time. So far, only one student requested makeup and provided proof for reasons of missing the normal quiz. If you need to make up and have good reasons, please contact me before Wednesday (10/28/2009) after which date, no make up will be allowed.

(10)           On Monday 10/5, I would expect to finish Chapter 1 and start Chapter 2. The Quiz-2 will be held on Wed 10/21 as planned.

(1)   Again, thanks to a very talented TA, our grades for Quiz-1 are ready. The average of 10.77/15.00 is just what I expected. If you still have questions about the grading, please contact TA Jason Chung before contacting me.

(2)   TA Jason just informed me that he will arrange his office hour in Light Engineering 175 on Fridays 11:40am-12:40pm. Jason: You need to have two hours per week for office hours. Other graders should be in office during office hours.

(3)   I propose to hold Quiz-2 on Oct 21 (Wed); please email me if this plan conflicts with your schedule.

(4)   I have posted more information about our graders although I still have not received anything about our 3rd TA.

(5)   HW1 grades are posted thanks to our very able TA Jason!

(6)   First order linear equation solution method is mathematically tedious and I’ll lecture on it very carefully and slowly on Monday. I also encourage you to read my book to get prepared.

(7)   There are still students asking questions about the exercises I introduced during my lectures. Please read on “I usually assign some “exercises” and ask some “questions” while lecturing but these are not part of the homework problems. You only need to work on the problems found in “Homework”. Of course, this does not mean you don’t think about the exercises.”

(39)           A request came to my attention to have the final earlier. The policy of the university and of AMS is that such request can be honored only if a major medical or other emergency requires you to be absent during the scheduled final. It requires formal written request and formal written approval.

(40)           The recitation attendance has improved and it’s a good sign.

(43)           The latest attendance for TA2 and TA4 recitations was extremely low. Although it’s likely the spring break was to blame, I hope the situation will improve. These recitations are important components of the course.

(44)           On Monday (April 13), I’ll start lecture Chapter 5 (Linear System of DEs.)

(45)           I modified Problem 6-6 of HW6 a little to further clarify what I need. To grading TA: a complete solution for the first part [fining the general solution for n=1/2] earns 7/10 points. Finding solution y2(x) with arbitrary “n” earns additional 3/10 points.

(46)           I found a sub to travel for me so that our original class schedule is unchanged!

(47)           Unless there are arithmetic or serious grading errors, grades will not be adjusted. The TA and I (although I only received 2-3 requests) are annoyed by requests of change without solid reasons.

(48)           HW sets are collected before 8:20AM on the collection days. In the past, all late HW sets were given a zero. This semester, I’ll allow you to be late once and a warning is given (recorded). A second (and beyond) late HW by the same student will be given a “zero” grade. A late homework is defined as those submitted between 8:20am and one of the earlier: solutions are posted on web or first recitation starts. After this time, homework is not collected for any reasons.

(49)           The grades (average: ~6/15) for Quiz-1 are similar to last semester’s and are surprising that they are not a bit better. However, the performance of Quiz-1 is weaker because students may require time to get used to a new class.

(50)           I have posted the solutions for quiz-1. Several (about 10-15) students emailed or spoke with me saying Quiz-1 is fair. I’m glad to hear that. The 3rd problem is a bit tedious so I have instructed the grading TA not to deduct any points for not completing the tedious steps as long as clear concept of doing such is outlined.

(51)           No class on Monday (3/2) due to snow. See you on Wednesday.

(52)           I re-did Problem 2-5 for HW Set 2 and posted it on web. Enjoy it.

(53)           Quiz-1 is confirmed on 2/25/2009 Wednesday in our regular classroom during the regular class time. You select any two of the three assigned problems for a total of 15 points. As I said many times during my lectures, Quiz1 will cover material I have lectured between Monday 1/26/2009 and Monday 2/23/2009. No more and no less! Open book test: Books, lecture notes, calculators, computers etc are all allowed. But, you must do your independent work.

(54)           HW sets are collected before 8:20AM on the collection days. In the past, all late HW sets were given a zero. This semester, I’ll allow you to be late once and a warning is given (recorded). A second (and beyond) late HW by the same student will be given a “zero” grade.

(55)           I was surprised by information that the Deng Notes costs a lot. I personally got nothing from it although I requested a small fee for the student who typed it. The student has not got anything either. I have a few old copies of the Deng Notes (not perfect but usable); please get from me for free if you need it. I also requested five copies of the new Notes for the library so please use that if necessary. My original purpose of making the Deng Notes was to provide students a cost-effective alternative to the textbook.

(56)           For some HW sets, I may assign similar or identical problems whose solutions are provided in “Deng Notes” or elsewhere on Internet. It’s no accident. You must work on the problems before checking the solutions from, e.g., “Deng Notes”. Copying from the Notes or elsewhere, if caught, will have serious consequences.

(57)           Thanks to your able TA (Ms. Zhao), HW1 grading is completed. Grades are posted. We attach each grade with an “ID”. You don’t know which “ID” is yours until you collect your HW1 on which the TA assigned you the “ID”. You may collect your graded HW1 any time from my office (A-135 Physics Tower) or wait till Monday when I bring it to classroom.

(58)           I have given a number of questions during my lectures and these questions are considered exercise that you are not required to do and to provide any solutions. These “on-the-fly” questions are presented to stimulate your thinking of the main subject matter.

(59)           On your returned HW1, our TA will mark you a class ID number useful for ams361 only. This ID is known to you, TAs, and me only. I need to use such “ID” to post information including grades. You need to include it in all correspondence including emails to me.

(60)           The three quizzes are planned for 2/25, 3/25, 4/20. However, I may move them a few days earlier or later to accommodate my travel. I’ll try my best to stick to the above posted dates. Should I have to make any changes, I’ll announce at least 1 week before the test. During the actual quiz week, we don’t have HW collection.

(61)           Recitations will start from Monday 2/2. Again, you are welcome to attend any recitation sessions you like.

(1)   At 2:30AM on Tuesday (12/23), I posted the final, total, and letter grades. Congratulations for completing a very challenging (and productive) semester to most of you. Please email or see me before 5PM 12/24 Wednesday if you like to discuss your grade. Thank my TAs who helped deliver you a great course. I’m sorry that the class is held at 8AM L

(2)   105 students have registered so far for the next semester. I hope you would make fair recommendations. Have a safe and pleasant holiday season!

 

(3)   The location of the final is “137 Physics Lecture Hall”. It is actually in the Harriman Building. When walking in from the main entrance to the building, the lecture hall is on your immediate left-hand-side. You should come in a few minutes earlier if you don’t know where it is. Call my office (632-8614) 3 minutes before 8am if you need help.

(4)   Students who submitted HW9 but see no HW9 grades on the web should see me on Monday (12/15). If you copied HW9 or offered to copy, it’s wiser to stay silent. If (very likely) you are innocent, please see me ASAP.

(5)   The final is to be held on Monday (12/22) in Physics 137 at 8-10:30. You would do any four of five problems for a total of 35 points. Ignore information about the final you might have got elsewhere.

(6)   Approximately 20 students attended review in my office. People who missed it or still have questions should come to my office for further Q&A. I’m in office most of the time, but it’s wiser to call me (2-8614) or email me before showing up.

(7)   I have received (so far) a total of seven emails about the review and the suitable time is scattered all over. Considering such, I plan to host a review session in my own office at 11AM on Monday (12/15), please stop by. My office can host ~15 students and it would be first-come first-sit.

(8)   Thanks to a very able TA, our HW9 grades and solutions are posted on my web. The graded papers are also available in front of my office as usual. So please pick yours up.

(9)   I’m preparing to have a review session. Please email me a time good for you on Monday (12/15). If we can’t find one common time, I may consider doing it multiple times.  If I receive enough requests and find a good time, I’ll post the time and location for the review. (21)           If you have to miss Tuesday (Election Day) recitation or TA office hours, please try to attend Monday’s recitation and make appointment with TAs (or myself) for office hours makeup.

(22)           Please attend recitations (at least one) where TAs will supplement my main lecture while outlining the steps of doing immediate next HW. TAs are also advised to solve old problems in greater details.

(23)           The performance of Q2 is excellent although I personally think the test is quite hard! The average is ~10. Congratulations!

(24)           Your classmate Ben remarked “Professor: your tests get harder and harder.” I think he’s right because I’m trying to explore the limit. To be fair, all problems are within the scope of our lectures. Additionally, the grades will be curved so that students who come to lectures regularly can do better and thus are rewarded better.

(25)           Students who have issues with recitations or, in general, with TAs are invited to my office on Monday (10/20) during my office hours. Relevant TAs are also requested to come to my office. But, students’ identities are protected if so requested.

(26)           Graded HW4 will be brought to the classroom on Monday (10/20).

(27)           Some of the problems in HW4 may require Monday (10/13)’s lecture, so I encourage you to attend Friday’s recitation or wait till my lecture on Monday, if you feel challenged.

(28)           HW3 was posted and I checked it at 9PM on Sunday and again just before posting this line: everything looks fine to me. Alex Cheng reported, before Monday (10/6) lecture, permission problems. Not true. Report again if your problem persists.

(29)           Grades for Quiz-1 are posted. Performance is slightly below expectation but not too bad. No need to worry about the performance too much. Do better for Quiz-2 and this performance will be smoothened out by two more quizzes and a final. Of course, if you tank more, you have to be careful.

(30)            “Grades” is finally fixed. Still, you need to collect your HW2 to know your class ID used for the grade posting.

(31)           Unclaimed HW1 and HW2 are left outside my office (near the door). Please collect yours.

(32)           Quiz-1 will cover material for the last seven lectures. Good luck!

(33)           We will have quiz-1 in the classroom during class time on Monday (9/29). You do any two of three problems during 80 minutes (no extra point for doing all three). The quiz is open-book so you may bring calculators, computers, Deng Notes, your notes, and textbook, etc as long as you do the test on your own. Let me know if you really hate open-book format and I would figure out something for you.

(34)           The solutions for HW1 and 2 are posted on my web. Enjoy them!

(35)           On Monday (9/22), I will cover first order linear equation solution method which contains tedious mathematical steps, so be prepared.

(36)           If you have difficulties in doing HW2, don’t panic. Monday (9/22)’s main lecture and two recitations prior to HW2 collection will help out. Anyway, many students wait till the last days to work on the homework J

(37)           There is NO class on Wednesday (10/1) and, naturally, there is no HW collection on that day.

(38)           HW3’s collection date is Wednesday (10/8).

(39)           Finally, we have TAs for all recitation sections so please go to one or more of them to enjoy them.

(40)           HW1 grading is completed and everyone is given a class ID with which and TAs and I will identify you. The ID, an integer in [1, 108], is marked on your HW1 (so please use it for correspondence with the course.)

(43)           I’m sorry that we have so much trouble for securing TAs for recitations due to visa issues for foreign graduate students. If your HW1 performance is adversely affected due to missing lecture for R02 on 9/16, please email or see me before I hand out the graded paper, on Monday (9/22).

Notes to TAs (and students for reference):

(1)   TAs must attend all recitation sessions starting week-2 (unless announced here otherwise) and record the number of attending students.

(2)   During recitation, TA should do the homework set just collected as detailed as possible and outline the solutions of the new set.

(3)   TAs must stay in their office during office hours.

(4)   TAs must send me the solutions of the homework sets assigned to them to grade, prior to grading, in word2007 with formulas.

(5)    All homework sets are collected on Wednesdays (assigned one week before). TAs should get the paper from me after Wednesday’s collection and return the graded paper no later than Friday of the same week.

1.        Grades as posted on my web were submitted to the SOLAR but a bug prevented you from viewing your grade. This was made known to me by one student who couldn’t view her grade. I’m working with the IT people to resolve it and no luck yet!

2.        Total grades are posted and SOLAR will be submitted 24 hours from now.

3.        Finally, the final is over. The good news is that the final only counts 30% to total and the bad news is that this year’s final is a bit harder than usual. I have posted the final with solutions on my web and the grades will be posted soon.

24.    Please don’t slip homework under the door of my office nor put in any TA or my mail box. If you have to submit it before the actual submission date, you hand it to me in person during my office hours. If you are late, no need to hand in.

25.    Quiz-2 solution is posted. When graded Quiz-2 is ready, I would inform you to pick up from the front of my office.

26.    If there is a mismatch of the class ID in “Students” and “Grades”, please ignore it as “Grades” is the only source for grading record. If you notice any errors in “Grades”, please email TA Seetha to state the error. This email must be copied to me and the grading TA. Seetha will fix the errors after investigation. This must be done before 5PM April 4.

27.    TA Ji Han is to be replaced by a volunteer Ms. Lingling Wu due to illness of the former. Lingling TAed for ams361 many times before and did excellently. She would go to the recitations starting April 8. I would work out Ji Han’s grading issues with the other three TA.

29.    TA Ji Han missed Tuesday (3/25) recitation although I have not received any request for re-arranging the recitation. I am aware of his health issues so I advise students to make efforts to attend one of the other three recitations, just in case he has to miss future recitations.

 

30.    Quiz-3 is moved to Wednesday (4/23) due to Passover break on Monday (4/21)

31.    Quiz-2 is to be offered on March 31 during class time in the regular classroom.

 

32.    The Course Evaluation for the fall 2007 semester shows that we did well; let’s try to do it even better for spring 2008. Nurturing a popular math class is a challenge but not impossible.

33.    TA Ji Han for Recitation Session 3 (today: 3/11) is in the university hospital so he is unable to teach the recitation. Please try to attend one of the other 3 sessions.

34.    Recitation attendance (checked the details by clicking “Info”) is not high. Please send me feedback to state if recitations are helpful or how to improve.

35.    Quiz-1 grades are posted (one revision was made to correct over count one student’s grade for using all three problems.) Paper will be returned on Monday (3/10).

36.    One student brought to my attention that one Quiz-1 problem is from the Deng Notes. This is no accident. You were and are encouraged to study the Notes or the textbook from which all test problems are adopted.

37.    TA for today (3/4/2008) recitation is very sick so he would have to skip today’s recitation. We will discuss makeup plan.

38.    Student list is updated on my web. Please make sure you are on the list correctly or your record will contain errors.

39.    No HW due for the week of 3/3/2008 because of Quiz-1.

41.    Ams361 class has added more than a dozen students since the beginning of the semester.

43.    Several students asked if last semester’s Deng Notes is OK. My answer is “There are quite a few error corrections and an addition of 9 sets of homework, 3 quizzes and 1 final. It’s worthwhile to have the new version.”

44.    Homework 1 is to be collected on Monday (2/11) instead of Wednesday for an acute situation. All future homework (including HW 2 already posted) will be collected on Wednesdays.

48.    Homework-1 assignment is ready. Please read the description and work on it.

49.    There are four sections and you DO NOT have to go to your registered section to attend recitation. You may rotate to any recitation that fits your schedule and taste.

51.    All homework set for each is assigned no later than Wednesday and is collected PRECISELY one week after, on Wednesday, before 8:20AM.

52.    No grades for late homework for any reason.

53.    We will have four sections for the semester; if you still can’t find a suitable slot, please discuss it with your or AMS undergraduate director.

54.    The class will be held in 102 Light Engineering Building at 8:05-9:25AM Mondays and Wednesdays.
