Unless there are arithmetic or serious grading errors,
grades will not be adjusted. The TA and I (although I only received 2-3
requests) are annoyed by requests of change without solid reasons.

This semester, I’ll allow you to be late once and a warning is given
(recorded). A second (and beyond) late HW by the same student will be given a
“zero” grade. A late homework is defined as those submitted between

starts. After this time, homework is not collected for any reasons.

The grades (average: ~6/15) for
Quiz-1 are similar to last semester’s and are surprising that they are
not a bit better. However, the performance of Quiz-1 is weaker because students
may require time to get used to a new class.

I have posted the solutions for
quiz-1. Several (about 10-15) students emailed or spoke with me saying Quiz-1
is fair. I’m glad to hear that. The 3rd problem is a bit
tedious so I have instructed the grading TA not to deduct any points for not
completing the tedious steps as long as clear concept of doing such is
outlined.

Wednesday in our regular classroom during the regular class time. You select
any two of the three assigned problems for a total of 15 points. As I said many
times during my lectures, Quiz1 will cover material I have lectured between
Monday 1/26/2009 and Monday 2/23/2009. No more and no less! Open book test:
Books, lecture notes, calculators, computers etc are all allowed. But, you must
do your independent work.

I was surprised by information
that the Deng Notes costs a lot. I personally got nothing from it although I
requested a small fee for the student who typed it. The student has not got
anything either. I have a few old copies of the Deng Notes (not perfect but
usable); please get from me for free if you need it. I also requested five
copies of the new Notes for the library so please use that if necessary. My
original purpose of making the Deng Notes was to provide students a
cost-effective alternative to the textbook.

For some HW sets, I may assign
similar or identical problems whose solutions are provided in “Deng
Notes” or elsewhere on Internet. It’s no accident. You must work on
the problems before checking the solutions from, e.g., “Deng Notes”.
Copying from the Notes or elsewhere, if caught, will have serious consequences.

Thanks to your able TA (Ms.
Zhao), HW1 grading is completed. Grades are posted. We attach each grade with
an “ID”. You don’t know which “ID” is yours until
you collect your HW1 on which the TA assigned you the “ID”. You may

I have given a number of
questions during my lectures and these questions are considered exercise that
you are not required to do and to provide any solutions. These
“on-the-fly” questions are presented to stimulate your thinking of

for ams361 many times before and did excellently. She would go to the
recitations starting April 8. I would work out Ji
Han’s grading issues with the other three TA.

Graded HW5 is ready in front of my office (A-135 Physics Tower). You are
strongly encouraged to pick up your old paper (HW1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and Quiz-1).
29. TA Ji Han missed
Tuesday (3/25) recitation although I have not received any request for
re-arranging the recitation. I am aware of his health issues so I advise
students to make efforts to attend one of the other three recitations, just in
case he has to miss future recitations.
30. Quiz-3 is moved to Wednesday (4/23) due to
Passover break on Monday (4/21)
31. Quiz-2 is to be offered on March 31 during
class time in the regular classroom.
32. The Course
Evaluation for the fall 2007 semester shows that we did well; let’s
try to do it even better for spring 2008. Nurturing a popular math class is a
challenge but not impossible.
33. TA Ji Han for
Recitation Session 3 (today: 3/11) is in the university hospital so he is
unable to teach the recitation. Please try to attend one of the other 3
sessions.

clicking “Info”) is not high. Please send me feedback to state if
recitations are helpful or how to improve.
35. Quiz-1 grades are posted (one revision was
made to correct over count one student’s grade for using all three
problems.) Paper will be returned on Monday (3/10).

Quiz-1 problem is from the Deng Notes. This is no
accident. You were and are encouraged to
study the Notes or the textbook from which all test problems are adopted.
37. TA for today (3/4/2008) recitation is very
sick so he would have to skip today’s recitation. We will discuss makeup

error corrections and an addition of 9 sets of homework, 3 quizzes and 1 final.
It’s worthwhile to have the new version.”

(2/11) instead of Wednesday for an acute situation. All future homework
(including HW 2 already posted) will be collected on Wednesdays.
