Venue: xxx

Final covers lectures: ALL!

1.     No late HW is accepted for any reasons (All HW collection will take place during the first 15 minutes of my lecture on the due date.)

2. All work (HW, quiz, and Final) will be accounted for the total grade according to the voted result at our first lecture.

3. Spending valuable time to argue with my TAs on grades is the most inefficient way to learn anything. BUT, you must check the posted grades regularly to avoid grading and recording errors!

4. Nobody is allowed to make up HW, quizzes, and final exam unless there is a proven medical or other emergency with a practical prior request (email or phone call) and authorized written proof. We do allow absences for university-approved events.

5. All tests are closed book and one-page (8.5x11) of formulae for each quiz and three pages for the final may be brought to the tests. We will decide this at our first class.

Announcements

1. I would be teaching a summer session of AMS361 in China. Please tell your friends who might be interested in it to view the web and even consider register for it.

2. Graded papers will be distributed in class. Unclaimed work will be collectible from the outside of my office (A-135 Physics Tower) anytime.

3. Grades for all HW sets, quizzes, and final will be posted to BlackBoard. Please check to verify there are no grading or recording errors. Discuss with Jason for any grading issues.

4. Solutions for HW1 are ready!

5. HW7, …, Quiz1, HW3, HW2, HW1 are ready!

6. Welcome the 205 students who have registered for AMS361 for Spring 2012 semester. I believe it’s a record.

7. For Chapter 4, I added five pages at the end of our book (D&L). Please download Section 4.5 here. Same password.

8. I appreciate the generous comments from the 2011 autumn class and many classes before. One student (2011 autumn class) said, “Professor Deng explains the topics very well and gives a ton of great examples. He keeps his lectures very interesting and is a wonderful teacher. Definitely a valuable person to this university”.

9. There is NO recitation and NO HW assignment during the first week.

10.         Let me phrase the issue related to textbook: (a) Between the two books (Edwards/Penney & Deng/Lou), one is sufficient and necessary; (b) E/P covers more than D/L and is a more professional production; (c) D/L covers most of lectures for the semester; (d) People without financial constraints should consider E/P latest edition; (e) People with financial constraints should consider borrowing/buying/renting a copy of D/L 2011(B) Edition.

11.         During our first class on 1/23/2012, we will vote to decide the grading and other policies.

12.         Please feel free to attend any one or more recitations that fit your taste and schedule. You may rotate recitation sessions as much as you wish, regardless of your registered session.

13.         I’ll assign a new password for the fall 2011 class for sensitive portions of our class web (e.g., grades, homework assignment and solutions, etc). The password will be given to registered students at our first class or earlier with special request (with proof of registration). No one is allowed to share this password with anyone in or out of this class. Responsible and legitimate uses are required.

14.         Check this website regularly for important announcements. Many aspects of this course will be similar to the last semesters’ so it’s smart to view what’s done before.

15.         HW will be collected by me on Wednesdays during the first 15 minutes of my lecture. Anything later than that will not be accepted. You may hand it to me in person prior to the due date for good reasons. Slipping under my office door or putting in my mailbox is not allowed for any reasons.
